Jaba Samushia Meets with Chinese Ambassador to Georgia

 

Academician Jaba Samushia, Rector of Tbilisi State University (TSU), held a working meeting with Zhou Qian, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Georgia.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Rector of TSU Erekle Astakhishvili, representatives of the TSU Administration and the Chinese Embassy in Georgia.

Rector Jaba Samushia provided the delegation with an overview of the university’s history and educational programs, including the Sinology program in the field of Far Eastern Studies, where students study Chinese history, culture and language. Rector Samushia noted that interest in this program is high among students. “Graduates of the program are employed in the Embassy and continue their studies in China. Therefore, the development of this direction is important. Tbilisi State University already collaborates with various universities in the People’s Republic of China, and our objective is to move to a new level of cooperation with higher educational institutions, universities, and research institutes in the People’s Republic of China,” Jaba Samushia said.

During the meeting, the participants stressed the importance of exchanging experience in the fields of innovation and technology. Chinese Ambassador Zhou Qian said that the development of higher education, science and technology is a strategic priority for the Republic of China. He suggested that exchanging academic staff and students, fostering cooperation between universities and research institutes, and sharing experiences in this direction would be crucial.

The parties expressed their willingness to strengthen and expand academic collaboration between Tbilisi State University and Chinese higher educational institutions at the level of research centers, as well as to promote the development of teaching of Chinese language, culture and history at Tbilisi State University, including the updating of textbooks and literature, and the teaching of Georgian language in Chinese universities.
